If You’re Going to Advertise for a job- PICK UP your Phone

15 May

So this is basically a continuation of my post about my EXHAUSTING job search, I first discussed on –You Know Times are Rough when The Porn Shop Doesn’t Call you Back!

Update: I STILL haven’t found a job.

And to be honest… It’s messing with my head at the moment.

I call.

I email.

I all but HARASS and still nothing! Nada! Zilch!

I’m starting to feel like that annoying ex that you just can’t get off your back! Only difference is NO ONE’S gotten any form of pleasure from my encounters.

The porn shop fell off my radar.

The cemetery never called back.

And now the Y is taunting me with constantly posting but NOT answering their phones… Though the Ad clearly request that you “Call for information” and not email poster, blah blah blah.

As you can see… and as I’ve mentioned… I am NOT picky- But I AM about to lose my mind!

Don’t even get me STARTED on how thankful I am that I went to college for what feels like NOTHING but what I’m sure is a shot liver!!!

So seriously… If anyone has any advice or some sort of words of encouragement, this would be the time to share them- Because I’M OVER IT!!!

Try applying for jobs a step up from what you have been applying for. It flies in the face of standard career articles that tell you to only apply for jobs you are truly qualified for…but sometimes it doesn’t hurt to apply for a job that maybe you feel is a little bit of a stretch over your qualifications. I actually got a call back doing this once. They didn’t want to interview me for the job I put in for, but instead they had a job that better fit my qualifications that wasn’t advertised.

You can also try building a professional profile on Linkedin (LI) – right now that is the “in” thing to get noticed by recruiters. You can also join groups to find other people in whatever industry or career you’re looking for…it’s a decent way to make job connections and research jobs/careers/industries. I know you can use FB for this as well, but this way you can keep FB separate and just use that for personal stuff and leave LI for the job stuff.

I know right now you’re focused on getting any job, but you’d probably do well to take a day and really think about what type of job or jobs you’d like to go for. What types of things would you like to do? What skills do you have that will get you that job? Are you interested in a specific industry? Do you want to stay local? Really develop a targeted resume and narrow your focus. It’s much easier to get “bites” that way.

If you ever want some feedback on your resume, I’d be happy to help.
